Fermentation happens when your gut bacteria breakdown undigested food. Tracking it allows your healthcare provider to detect the presence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and carbohydrate malabsorption. SIBO TESTING: SIBO is when you have greater amounts of bacteria than normal in your small intestine. When these bacteria breakdown undigested food, hydrogen and other gases are generated. Fermentation normally happens later in your large intestine. But when it happens sooner it may trigger digestive symptoms.
